A device (1) or a method for monitoring the hygiene status of a drinking water installation (2) having at least one water removal point (3) is presented. This monitoring device (1) comprises at least one power supply (4), a sensor (5), a controller (6) and a display (7) which are each operatively connected to one another. The sensor (5) is designed for detecting the usage or a qualified change of water carried out at the water removal point (3) and for emitting sensor signals (8) to the controller (6). The controller (6) is designed for evaluating these sensor signals (8) on the basis of predetermined selection criteria and for outputting status signals (9) corresponding to the current usage or the qualified change of water and the selection criteria.
