An automated in-stream inoculation apparatus for iron discharged from an electric furnace and a method employing the apparatus to carry out automated in-stream inoculation. The in-stream inoculation apparatus comprises: a material storage apparatus, a material conveyor apparatus, a material feeder apparatus, an actuator apparatus, a molten iron weighing system, and a control system. The material storage apparatus is used for storing an inoculant. The material conveyor apparatus conveys at a set speed the inoculant discharged from the material storage apparatus to the material feeder apparatus. The material feeder apparatus adjusts, on the basis of changes in the position of a casted molten iron flow arc requiring inoculation, the position of a material feeding port for accurate in-stream inoculation. The actuator apparatus drives the conveyor apparatus to rotate at an appropriate output speed. The molten iron weighing system is used for weighing in real-time the weight of molten iron remaining in the furnace and feeding back to the control system. The control system controls, on the basis of a time during which the molten iron is discharged and the volume of iron discharged, the rate at which the inoculant is added. The apparatus and method implement timely changes in the volume of the inoculant added according to changes in the volume of molten iron and changes in the position at which the inoculant is fed according to changes in the position of the molten iron flow arc.
