An augmented reality technology-based handheld reading device and a method thereof. The device comprises: a video acquisition unit (10), used for capturing a real scene by means of a first camera; an intelligent computing terminal (12), used for identifying a two-dimensional code in the real scene to obtain code value information and space position information, then placing a preset virtual scene according to the space position information, and generating a reading frame obtained by mixing the real scene with the virtual scene; a voice output unit (14), used for outputting voice information corresponding to the virtual scene by means of a loudspeaker; and a liquid crystal display screen (16), which is circular and is used for displaying the reading frame. Compared with the prior art, the handheld reading device can generate a virtual environment that highly matches the real scene and that has vivid visual sense, hearing sense, touching sense, strength feel, dynamic feel and the like, and can realize direct interaction between a user and a virtual three-dimensional environment. In this manner, for a child, more sensory stimulation is available, learning efficiency is improved, and the teaching with pleasure is achieved.
