The present invention provides a mouth freshener composition free of betel nuts. The present invention provides a process of preparing cola nuts having hard bite through, refreshing and stimulating characteristics similar to betel nut for use in a mouth freshener composition. The cola nuts are cleaned, blanched, cut to size and air dried and sprayed with preservative solution before storage. The present invention further provides a process of preparing a betel nut free mouth freshener composition wherein the cola nuts obtained by the process of the invention are processed with flavours, oils, cardamom seeds and aromatic ingredients before being mixed with a dusting mix to obtain the mouth freshner composition having hard bite through, refreshing and stimulating characteristics similar to composition containing betel nut.
