Various aspects provide for determining whether an Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access (E-UTRA) Absolute Radio Frequency Channel Number (EARFCN) value is greater than a predetermined reserved value for at least one neighbouring cell. If the EARFCN value is greater than the predetermined reserved value, various aspects further provide for including the predetermined reserved value in an E-UTRA Network (E-UTRAN) neighbour cell structure and providing one or more extended EARFCNs used in the E-UTRAN in an extended EARFCN structure included in an existing system information message used in a Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) random access network (RAN). The predetermined reserved value may be equal to OxFFFF. The existing system information message may be a SYSTEM INFORMATION TYPE 2quater message according to a GSM Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) RAN (GERAN) standard.
