A railway station area having a protective device for the protection of persons against moving rail vehicles comprises a protective wall (1). The railway station area contains at least one platform (4), the platform (4) having at least one platform edge (2) and tracks for a rail vehicle being arranged on a first side of the platform edge (2), wherein a platform surface (23) extends from the second side of the platform edge (2). The platform surface is embodied as a waiting area for persons. The protective wall (1) is located at or in the vicinity of the platform edge (2) and can be adjusted between a retracted state and a deployed state in such a way that in the deployed state of the protective wall (1) access to the tracks is prevented, and in the retracted state access to the tracks is granted. At least an upper edge of the protective wall can be displaced from the platform edge in the direction of the platform surface (3) along a displacement path with a displacement speed, the displacement speed having a horizontal speed component.
