The invention relates to an improved method and an improved device for determining the alertness of a vehicle driver. The method determines a metric value representing the attention of a vehicle driver. It comprises the steps of: - detecting a viewing direction of the vehicle driver, - determining an actual frequency distribution of the viewing direction, - determining the metric value as a function of a deviation of the actual frequency distribution from a nominal frequency distribution of the viewing direction.
