The present invention relates to carbon-coated mesoporous silicon oxide (SiO_x) particles for a high-capacity lithium storage material and a preparation method thereof, and more particularly to, a method for preparing a carbon-coated porous SiO_x as a high-capacity lithium storage material, and a negative electrode material for lithium ion batteries comprising the same, wherein the porous SiO_x is synthesized by an oil-water templating process using a sol-gel reaction of hydrogen silsesquioxane. The carbon-coated mesoporous SiO_x particles for lithium storage material of the present invention not only have a high-capacity but also have good cycle performance, speed characteristic, and thermal stability without dimensional changes even when the number of cycles is more than 100. Also, according to the present invention, it is possible to produce carbon-coated porous SiO_x negative electrode material for high-capacity lithium ion batteries in a large amount without an additional coating process at a low production cost, thereby allowing applications in capacitors, lithium secondary cells, electric cars, and flexible electronic devices.
