The present invention relates to a method for improving local contrast of an image and an apparatus thereof. More particularly, the present invention relates to the local contrast improvement method and the apparatus thereof, capable of removing noise generated during a contrast improvement process, by judging where a unit image block belongs to among a plain area, an edge area, and a texture area on the basis of a texture value and an edge value calculated from a conversion coefficient of the unit image block in a frequency domain, and giving different contrast weighting values on the basis of the judgment result.
