The present invention relates to a method for determining air contamination of an air cleaner. In the step (d), the gas sensor reference value is increased by a predetermined amount when the gas sensor measurement value is greater than the gas sensor reference value, the gas sensor reference value is decreased by a predetermined amount when the gas sensor measurement value is equal to or smaller than the gas sensor reference value, and the gas sensor measurement value and the gas sensor reference value are compared with each other whenever the predetermined change-time of the gas sensor reference value is passed, thereby determining air contamination. According to the present invention, the method for determining the contamination of the air cleaner, capable of optimizing air volume adjustment in any installation environment is provided. In addition, the method for determining the contamination, capable of rapidly detecting the air contamination afterwards when current air is in a clean state, and focusing just on a purifying activity of currently measured air when the current air is in a contaminated state is provided.
