The present invention relates to a method of producing a cathode active material for a lithium rechargeable battery and a cathode active material for a lithium rechargeable battery produced thereby. A method of producing a cathode active material for a lithium rechargeable battery and a cathode active material for a lithium rechargeable battery produced thereby according to the present invention relate to LiFeSO4F which has excellent specific capacity compared to a conventional cathode active material for a lithium rechargeable battery and excellent properties as Fe2+/3+ redox couple with high voltage band is contained. Moreover, the present invention solves the problem of decomposition generated when producing LiFeSO4F through conventional solid-phase or wet methods by using sulfates and oxides. Furthermore, the method contributes to reducing manufacturing costs as the method is completed without a process requiring a long reaction process conducted at high temperature and a heat treatment process.
