Methods and apparatus for wireless communication are provided for improving call performance and power consumption during a connection state of a user equipment (UE). Aspects of methods and apparatus are related to receiving a transmit power control (TPC) command from a network entity and decoding each TPC slot of a TPC command. Aspects of methods and apparatuses include stopping decoding of a set of TPC slots when a current decoded symbol of a TPC slot is inconsistent with a previously decoded symbol of a TPC slot. The UE's receiver is then deactivated to the end of the TPC slot set.
