A system and method for a field emission device are provided. An array of carbon nanotubes is arranged on the cathode substrate in a variable height distribution. An anode is provided to accelerate the emitted electrons towards the x-ray plate. A voltage across the array of carbon nanotubes is provided to cause the emission of electrons. The sharp height distribution can be linear or parabolic, and the peak height of the variable height distribution can occur at the center of the array. The side gates may also be provided close to the array of carbon nanotubes to provide improved electron emission and focused control.;
