1. A method of manufacturing a catalyst, said method comprising: homogenizing an inorganic oxide material, molybdenum trioxide, a compound of nickel and phosphorus oxide (V) (PO) in a solid state to form a mixture; molding a particle from said mixture; and calcining said particle to obtain a calcined particle. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein said mixture comprises said inorganic oxide material in an amount of from about 40 wt.% To about 95 wt.% Of said mixture; the specified molybdenum trioxide in an amount up to about 16 wt.% in terms of oxide relative to the weight of the specified mixture; the specified Nickel compound in an amount up to about 4 wt.% in terms of oxide relative to the weight of the specified mixture; and said phosphorus (V) oxide in a solid state in an amount of about 0.2 wt.% to about 8 wt.% of said mixture. The method according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said calcined particle comprises phosphorus present in such an amount as to provide an atomic ratio of phosphorus to molybdenum in the range from 0.04 to 1.4. The method of claim 1 or 2, wherein said calcined particle has an average pore diameter in the range of 70 Ǻ to 130 Ǻ. 5. A method according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said calcined particle has a specific surface area that exceeds 200 m / g.
