FIELD: gas industry.;SUBSTANCE: invention relates to determination of gas retention capacity of coal while forecasting of gas content inside coal beds. Method of studying sorption properties of coals is implemented as follows. Temperature required for analysis is determined following with pumping a measured gas volume under pressure of 1 MPa with further increase of pressure with interval of 1 MPa. Then the volume of absorbed gas is determined by the measured volumes at each pressure value and gas retention capacity of coal is calculated per ton and dry ashless mass with due allowance for moisture and ash content. Then obtained data are used to construct a linear function with indication of formula for both curves. Coefficients are determined from the formula for calculation of Langmuir volume and pressure. Obtained values are used in adsorption equation to determine gas retention capacity. Diagram of measured and calculated values of gas retention capacity as per pressure values is made.;EFFECT: possibility of simultaneous product investigations for determining gas retention properties of coals taken from wells with different formation temperature.;1 cl, 3 tbl, 4 dwg
