FIELD: metallurgy.;SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing on an industrial scale mesophase pitch from high-temperature coal tar. Method comprises removing salts and quinoline insoluble fraction from a high-temperature coal tar to obtain a decant oil, pre-distilling decant oil to obtain a residue with a boiling point higher than 230 °C and formation of hydrogenated feedstock; catalytic hydrotreatment of hydrogenated feedstock to obtain hydrotreated oil and hydrogenated solvent with high boiling point in range of 300-360 °C; distillation of hydrotreated oil to produce hydrogenated pitch; polymerisation of hydrogenated pitch in order to obtain mesophase pitch. Hydrogenated solvent is used as a solvent at step of removal of salts, as solvent at step of removal of fraction insoluble in quinoline and/or as part of composite oil when producing hydrogenated feedstock.;EFFECT: obtained product has high content of mesophase pitch, low melting point and low content of impurities.;35 cl, 7 dwg, 17 tbl, 3 ex
