A method for determining the minimum radius of a horizontal turning circle of an open tunnel drilling machine (tbm) has, on: step one, detecting an initial minimum radius of the horizontal turning circle of a tbm according to the stroke of the gripper cylinder of the tbm; step two, check and modifying the initial minimum radius of the horizontal turning circle. The method for determining the radius of the horizontal turning circle of the open tbm realized by a rapid and precise calculation of the minimum radius of the horizontal turning circle of the open tbm, as a result of which a planning design effectively is evaluated, the problem is avoided, that the planning of the constructional requirements with respect to the invention can be not meet the requirements, and a basic course for the optimal planning of the tbm is made available.
