A method for remotely starting an engine of a vehicle includes informing a user remote from the vehicle by the vehicle that an accumulator of the vehicle has a charge state below a predetermined threshold. The method includes remotely starting the engine to charge the accumulator with power from the engine after receiving an acknowledgment from the user to start the engine. Another method includes remotely starting the engine in response to an instruction from the user to start the engine to precondition the vehicle. This method evaluates the state of charge of the accumulator following engine start-up and adjusts engine on-time and vehicle settings to prioritize accumulator charge conservation versus preconditioning based on state-of-charge.
