NMESIS: THE MARINE CORPS' TOP PRIORITY FOR GROUND FORCES IS A NEW REMOTE-CONTROLLED, SHIP-KILLING VEHICLE

This fall, the Marine Corps is slated to lock in the design of a robotically controlled, ship-killing ground vehicle rapidly prototyped over the last two years and formally adopted this spring as a top modernization priority, which top brass say is critical to recalibrating the force for a potential fight against China. The project is called the Navy/Marine Corps Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System - or NMESIS - which pairs a modified Joint Light Tactical Vehicle with medium-range cruise missiles. It aims to deliver the Marine Corps its first Ground Based Anti-Ship Missile (GBASM) capability, an effort that began as a research and development project in 2018, was selected in 2019 by service leaders for accelerated development, demonstrated a flight test in 2020 and this spring achieved elevated status.
