A hybrid electric vehicle includes an engine that can selectively provide propulsion torque to propel the vehicle. An electric machine also selectively provides drive torque. A differential transfers the torque to wheels and splits it between them. A planetary gear set is coupled to the engine and has a ring gear for transmitting ring gear torque to the differential. An endless torque transmitting member operatively couples the ring gear and the electric machine to the differential. At least one controller is configured to change the output of the engine based on a ring gear torque threshold. This allows a desired torque to be transmitted through the endless torque transmitting member to the differential.
