Control of a solid state luminaire and luminaire, lighting system and integrated circuit with such a controller

Smart control of a solid state lamp is provided when coupled with a phase-segment dimmer switch. On and off cycles of the power stage switch of the lamp are activated during a period during which the energy in the bulk capacitor is at its highest level. During this period, a bleeder resistor circuit does not have to be activated, resulting in greater operating efficiency compared to normal phase-shifter dimming schemes.
