An improved method and apparatus for determining the attention of a driver is proposed. The method determines a measure of the attention of a driver. It comprises the steps of: detecting a viewing direction of the vehicle driver, determining an actual frequency distribution of the viewing direction, determining the measured value as a function of a deviation of the actual frequency distribution from a desired frequency distribution of the viewing direction.
