System to reduce emissions of CO² from shipping and heavy transport

A system for removing carbon dioxide emissions from exhaust gases comprises one or more sorption reactors containing a bed of lime particles for absorbing carbon dioxide by an exothermal reaction and a waste heat recovery sub-system arranged to recover a proportion of exhaust gas waste heat and exothermal reaction heat and convert the recovered heat into motive power. The system may be applied to the engine of a ship and may be further arranged to carry excess lime for spreading on the surface of the ocean to reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide and increase the alkalinity of the ocean. Also disclosed is a method for removing carbon dioxide from the exhaust gases of an engine using the system of the invention.
