Traffic warning apparatus and traffic warning method for warning traffic participants of a danger area

A vehicle 2, particularly a long vehicle with a trailer 20, has a warning system to warn other road users 11 of a danger area 5 present when e.g. the vehicle makes a wide turn. The warning device may project the danger area onto the road surface using light or may be a display or other visual indicator mounted on the vehicle. The warning system senses that the vehicle is turning using e.g. a steering angle sensor, acceleration or yaw sensor, GPS, or via the actuation of the direction indicator of the vehicle. The danger area may be evaluated on the basis of the length and/or width of the vehicle. The system may also be used to indicate when the vehicle intends to manoeuvre around an obstacle or narrowing in the road (figures 3, 4 and 6).
