An automotive electronic control system (E-ECU, PWT-ECU; ECU) for a powertrain (PWT) of a motor vehicle (MV); the powertrain (PWT) comprising an internal combustion engine (ICE) and a servo-actuated drive line (T); the drive line (T) comprising a gearbox (G) and a clutch (C); and the automotive electronic control system (ECU) being configured to control the powertrain (PWT) to cause stopping of the internal combustion engine (ICE) and disengagement of the drive line (T), whereby resulting in the motor vehicle (MV) entering a freewheel running condition with stopped internal combustion engine off, and cranking of the internal combustion engine (ICE) and engagement of the drive line (T), whereby resulting in the motor vehicle (MV) leaving the freewheel running condition with internal combustion engine off; the automotive electronic control system (E-ECU, PWT-ECU; ECU) being further configured to control the drive line (T) during an internal combustion engine run-down consequent upon the motor vehicle (MV) entering the freewheel running condition with the internal combustion engine off, to cause engagement of a gear appropriate for inertial cranking of the internal combustion engine (ICE) before the internal combustion engine (ICE) leaves a self-sustaining operating condition, while the clutch (C) is kept engaged.
