A system for storing items of value, an apparatus for securing items of value and a method for retrieving a secure container are described. The apparatus comprises a housing configured to accept items of value and having an open end, an aperture plate, fixedly coupled to the housing and having an opening for inserting items of value into the housing, and a closure mechanism operably coupled to the aperture plate. The closure mechanism configured to move between an open position whereby items of value can be inserted through the opening in the aperture plate and into the housing, and a closed position wherein items of value are prevented from being inserted through the opening in the aperture plate and into the housing.
