In order to sectionally replace old sleepers (7) of a track (3) with new sleepers (8), ballast (11) is suctioned from sleeper bays (29) of a sleeper group (30) comprising at least five adjoining old sleepers (7) and intermediately stored. The old sleepers (7) are shifted relative to one another with respect to a vehicle longitudinal direction (5) such that the old sleepers (7) are positioned directly adjoining one another. The old sleepers (7) are rotated individually 90 degrees, lifted between the two tracks (13) and transported away. The new sleepers (8) are lowered individually between the two tracks (13), rotated 90 degrees and spaced from one another.
