The invention relates to a method for operating one or more road milling machines. In the process, material properties of a road are recorded and assigned geographically to one or more streets or road sections. On the basis of the material properties an expected milling performance of a road milling machine when performing milling on the road or an expected wear of the milling tools is determined. Based on this data, an optimized sequence of milling work to be performed is created. The invention further relates to a corresponding control device and a computer program product for carrying out the method. By the method, the control device and the computer program product, the costs for carrying out road milling work can be significantly reduced.
