PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods for detecting in vitro the presence of genome of a DNA virus or virus-derived DNA in infected eukaryotic cells, tissues and body fluids by using Molecular Combing or other nucleic acid stretching methods together with probes of a specific design.SOLUTION: Provided is a method for detecting an infectious viral polynucleotide in a biological sample, comprising the steps of: isolating, extracting or obtaining a polynucleotide from the sample; forming an elongated polynucleotide by molecular combing the polynucleotide; contacting the elongated polynucleotide with one or more probes recognizing an infectious polynucleotide sequence; and detecting hybridization between the combed sample and the probe.SELECTED DRAWING: None
