PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal aligning agent that develops good liquid crystal aligning property in a photo-aligning process even with a decreased quantity of exposure light and that can give a liquid crystal element excellent in electric characteristics and contrast characteristics.SOLUTION: The liquid crystal aligning agent contains a polymer [P] having a partial structure represented by formula (1) below in the main chain. In the formula, Rrepresents a hydrogen atom, a fluorine atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, a fluoroalkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, or a divalent connecting group to be bonded to Arto constitute a part of a ring; Rrepresents a hydrogen atom, a fluorine atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, a fluoroalkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, or a divalent connecting group to be bonded to Arto constitute a part of a ring; R, R, Rand Rrepresent a hydrogen atom, a fluorine atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, or a fluoroalkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms; and Arand Arrepresent a cyclic group having an aromatic ring or a heterocycle, or an ethynylene group, where the cyclic group may have a substituent in the ring moiety.SELECTED DRAWING: None
