PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: a nitrogen-containing carbon material having high oxygen reduction activity and a method of producing the same; a precursor composition for a nitrogen-containing carbon material for providing the nitrogen-containing carbon material; and an electrode for a fuel cell using the nitrogen-containing carbon material.SOLUTION: There is provided a method for producing a nitrogen-containing carbon material which comprises: a first step of mixing a nitrogen-containing aromatic ring compound having 4 or more nitrogen atoms in the aromatic ring structure and two or more pairs of multi-coordination sites by the two or more nitrogen atoms and a transition metal salt to obtain a precursor composition for a nitrogen-containing carbon material; and a second step of heat-treating the resulting precursor composition for a nitrogen-containing carbon material to obtain a nitrogen-containing carbon material.SELECTED DRAWING: None
