PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spring steel wire excellent in spring winding properties.SOLUTION: A spring steel wire excellent in spring winding properties includes, in mass%, 0.1-1.5% C, 0.01-3% Cr, 1.0-2.5% Si, 0.01-2% Mn, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities, with a content of P and S included in the inevitable impurities being suppressed to over 0% and 0.05% or less, respectively. The spring steel wire includes a scale with thickness of 1-5 μm on a surface thereof. Constituent elements of the scale include, by mass%, 0.5-10% Ca, 5% or less Si and Cr in total, 10% or less C, Mn, P, S, Mo, Cu, Ni, Ti, V, Nb and Zn in total, and the balance Fe and O. A manufacturing method of the spring steel wire is also provided.SELECTED DRAWING: None
