The present invention relates to a melt-spinnable copolymer of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) that can be prepared using copolymerization of acrylonitrile and alkoxyalkyl acrylate. Additional comonomers can be alkyl acrylates and vinyl esters. The invention also relates to a process for the production of fibers or fiber precursors, in particular carbon fiber precursors, using melt spinning, in which the aforementioned copolymers are used. Furthermore, the present invention relates to fibers produced by such a method, in particular carbon fibers. [Selection] Figure 1
