Freeform lenses (eg, phase modulators, lenses or deformable mirrors) may be formed to reproduce the light pattern specified by the image data. The plurality of source regions on the freeform lens may be mapped to the areas of the plurality of target regions on the image. The areas of the plurality of source regions are adjusted so as to change the amount of light transmitted to each of the plurality of target regions. The source area adjustment may preferably be achieved using L-BFGS optimization incorporating smoothness and rotation normalizers. Embodiments apply parallel processing to obtain freeform lens control values in real time or near real time. The apparatus may process the image data and display the image by controlling the dynamically variable freeform lens using the processed image data.
