PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide rosin-modified cellulose and rosin-modified cellulose microfibrils having excellent hydrophobic effects and high crystallinity.SOLUTION: A rosin-modified cellulose whose hydroxyl groups partly form ester linkages with acid anhydrides of rosin compounds, wherein a degree of modification of the cellulose is 1.0 to 20% and a degree of crystallinity is 40 or more according to X-ray crystal diffraction; rosin-modified cellulose microfibrils whose hydroxyl groups partly form ester linkages with acid anhydrides of rosin compounds, wherein a degree of modification of the cellulose is 1.0 to 20% and a degree of crystallinity is 40 or more according to X-ray crystal diffraction.
