PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an accident prevention device that can determine the possibility that an obstacle or a difference in level exists in a measurement direction regardless of the position or the measurement direction from a lower surface and that only consumes a small amount of electricity, and a portable electronic device having the accident prevention device.SOLUTION: An accident prevention device (10) includes: a distance sensor (12) detecting a distance to a lower surface; a gravity sensor (13) detecting a direction of measurement of the distance sensor (12); a distance calculating unit (21) calculating a distance to the lower surface based on a distance to the lower surface in a gravity direction and the measurement direction of the distance sensor (12); and an accident determination notifying part (22) determining whether an obstacle or a difference in level may exist in the measurement direction by comparing the distance detected by the distance sensor (12) and the distance calculated by the distance calculating unit (21) and notifying a user of the possibility of presence of an obstacle or a level difference in the measurement direction if the possibility of presence has been determined.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
