A method of synthesizing lipid mixtures that represents the structural diversity of lipids present in a subject sample is provided. The lipid complex mixture produced according to the method of the present disclosure can be used as an internal standard for detecting and quantifying lipids in a subject sample. Also provided is a kit comprising the internal standard and instructions for using the internal standard for detection and quantification of lipids in a subject sample. [Selection] Figure 1
