Methods, systems, and software are provided for monitoring a signal from a living body and measuring the function of the living body. In particular, the respiratory inductance plethysmographic signal and the esophageal manometry signal are accurately calibrated to measure the patient's breathing effort before and after extubation, and an automated real-time determination of whether the patient has upper airway obstruction and its severity. Computer methods, computer systems, and software are provided that provide interpretation to clinicians. The method, system and software can be adapted specifically for children or infants.
