PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately detect the shape of a steel plate by appropriately removing the noise of water vapor or the like, and to improve yield according to the shape of the steel plate appropriately detected during rolling.SOLUTION: The outline of a steel plate S is optically detected by a camera 7, the detected outline of the steel plate S is extracted as coordinate data, coordinate data having a large variance with respect to nearby coordinate data is removed as noise, larger weight is set as the data density of the remaining coordinate data is larger, and a curve corresponding to the outline of the steel plate S is subjected to curve approximation by using the set weight. When the absolute value of a difference between the curve-approximated coordinate data and the remaining coordinate data is larger than a prescribed value ε, the coordinate data is removed again, larger weight is set again as the data density of the remaining coordinate data is larger, the outline of the steel plate S is subjected to curve approximation again by using the re-set weight, and the shape of the steel plate S is calculated from a curve corresponding to the outline of the steel plate S subjected to curve approximation again.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 5
