Systems and methods for optimizing tree support contact points in additive manufacturing are described. The systems and methods involve analyzing an object to determine support needed and defining a trunk for a tree support. The trunk is anchored to a platform and connection points are determined for at least one branch of the tree support. Subsequently, connection types and parameters for branch connections to the surface of the object can be selected and the at least one branch is then connected to the surface of the part and the trunk to create the tree-shaped support.
