The present invention provides a method and apparatus for directing an optical receiver (1) to a light source using various light detectors (9 39) arranged around the optical axis (10) of the receiver (1) to verify where (l) reaches the light detectors (9 39) relative to the optical axis, the method including the steps of: a) arranging the receiver (1) out of focus to allow as much field of view as possible in the area in which the light source may be located and refract the light as wide as possible; b) letting the receiver (1) search for the light source until the light (l) reaches at least one of the light detectors (9 39); c) calculate where the light reaches in relation to the optical axis, and adjust the receiver by directing the light to the optical axis; d) reduce the field of view allowed by the receiver; and e) repeat steps c and d until the light is concentrated in as small an area as possible.
