The present invention provides strains of f. attenuated columnare that elicit an immune response in an animal, particularly fish, against compositions of f. virulent columnare comprising said strains, methods of vaccination against f. columnare, and kits for use with such methods and compositions. The invention further relates to a stabilizing buffer which allows attenuated compositions to remain stable at room temperature for extended periods of time.
