abstract “engineered liver tissues, their matrices and methods of preparing same” active three-dimensional liver tissue constructs engineered comprising: one or more layers, wherein each layer contains one or more liver cell types, one or more layers combined to form an active three-dimensional liver tissue construct. In some embodiments, the constructions are characterized by having at least one of: at least one layer comprising a plurality of cell types, the spatially cell types arranged together to create a flat geometry; and a plurality of layers, at least one compositional or architecturally distinct layer from at least one other layer to create a laminar geometry. Also disclosed are matrices and methods of preparing them. Also disclosed are active three-dimensional liver tissue constructs engineered for use in augmentation or restoration of one or more liver functions by in vivo tissue release or use of tissue in an extracorporeal device.
