The subject invention provides a novel and advantageous strain of Pasteuria sp. ATCC PTA-9643 bacteria for the protection of crops against nematodes or a mutant or variant thereof. Also provided are nematicidal compositions comprising the Pasteuria strain or a mutant or variant thereof and a method for the protection of crops against soil-dwelling nematodes.
