This invention relates to the enhancement of simulated/synthetic inertia systems to respond naturally to a frequency disturbance event by measuring and amplify the real inertial response of a pilot scale grid connected synchronous compensator (1), using a converter (4,9) fed by electrically stored energy sources (5,10). This solution eliminates difficulties with frequency measurement, harmonic distortion of waves, complexity of algorithm, and ensures that the stored energy feeding onto the converter can only be released in proportion to the natural, real inertial response of the pilot synchronous compensator.
