A method and a system for imaging a target volume of a subject are presented. A plurality of gated functional images and a plurality of gated structural images corresponding to the target volume are received. An evolving mean functional image and an evolving mean cine structural image are computed by iteratively averaging a plurality of pixels corresponding to the gated functional and gated cine structural images, respectively. Further, transforms that align one or more of the gated functional images to the evolving mean functional image and one or more of the gated cine structural images to the evolving mean structural image are iteratively computed based on at least one matching metric until convergence of the evolving mean functional and evolving mean structural image. Subsequently, one or more motion-corrected functional images are generated based on the converged mean functional and mean structural image.
