The present invention provide salinity tolerant rice plants by reducing expression of OsPrr1 gene and a method for silencing of OsPrr1 gene through genome editing tools preferably RNA interference (RNAi) to increase salinity stress tolerance in rice and other plants. A unique fragment of 566bp of this gene is cloned in sense and antisense orientation separated by a spacer under 35S promoter in pFGC1008 vector. The pFGC1008-OsPrr1 construct thus obtained is transformed into Agrobacterium strain LBA4404 by freeze thaw method. The transformed Agrobacterium strain LBA4404 thus obtained is used to transform rice plants for reducing the expression of OsPrr1 gene. Rice plants obtained after transformation are screened by PCR technique. Screened rice plants show reduced expression of OsPrr1 gene in comparison to that of wild type rice plants. These plants show better growth under salinity stress at seedling stage as compared to wild type rice plants.
