Advantage: Even after the failure of main communication automatic redundant communication and signaling takes place which avoids collision. Even after power outage by means of backup PLC automatically assists in opening the emergency exit and turning on the tunnel lights. Since everything is automated manual intervention is not required. Conclusion: Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is mainly used for taking control actions according to the input signal given. It is used for controlling the train signals, inter passage door control and tunnel light control which is being monitored by SCADA. Thus by means of implementing this project, safety measures in metro rail system are being enhanced. Abstract of the invention: Metro Rail is the upcoming rapid transit system. Due to rapid population growth mass public transportation is indispensable. At present we rely more on buses and other transport systems which uses non renewable resources as fuels. The possibility of depletion and the hike in price makes it unsuitable for long run. Hence an alternative upcoming solution is the Metro Rail. This offers reliable sophisticated, eco friendly and faster mode of transportation in comparison with the existing transport systems. This also has an added advantage that there is no possibility of traffic. In case of occurrence of power outage the train gets halted inside a tunnel and the communication system between the station and the train gets interrupted. This may lead to lag of signal transmission between stations and affect the arrival of subsequent trains. In order to overcome this problem IR sensors are placed in the tracks at regular interval which gives the trains position as the input signal to the Programmable Logic Controller and it is continuously being monitored by SCADA. In addition inter passage door is opened and tunnel lights are turned on automatically for the safety of passengers.
