ABSTRACT Design of Active Catalytic converter system to reduce cold start emission from automobiles A novel design of an Active Catalytic converter system with secondary air injection is disclosed. The exhaust gas of an automobile is made to pass through an Electrically heated Catalyst (EHC) followed by a Light Off Converter, before the exhaust gas reaches the Main converter MC. When a metal oxide coated EHC is used and the EHC volume is about 20 % of the MC and the LOC volume is about 10% of the MC, a significant reduction of cold start emission was observed.
