The handheld device has housing (1) having drive device (2) for advancing movement. A piercing device formed in the housing has needle (4) and coupled directly or indirectly to the drive device via a coupling device, such that piercing device is moved forward/backward by drive device and the needle is relatively moved to and fro in housing opening (6). A lancing depth adjuster coupled to the lancing device is displaceable relative to the needle tip of the needle and the forward/backward movement of the needle in the operation.
